If you are going on a first date and are nervous about what interesting questions you might ask your girl, or what fun things you could do, take some tips from the movies!

Here are some well-known first date scenes that just might prove to be guaranteed great first dates for you.

10 Things I Hate About You

Julia Stiles and Heath Ledger engage in a hilarious and playful scene, in which Stiles and Ledger are running around in white suits throwing paintballs at each other and laughing. At one point, in the culmination of the scene, Ledger grabs Stiles and pushes her into a pile of hay. She falls down, and he wipes her face, strokes her paintball streaked hair, and kisses her. If you are thinking of going on a first date that is fast paced, silly and fun, head over to your nearest paintball or laser tag establishment. This is an easy way to have a great time and maybe make some romance as well!

Notting Hill

Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts are walking home from a dinner party. They find a locked garden and sneak in. Cut to Roberts in the foreground of the scene and Grant walks up behind her, romantic music plays, and Roberts turns and kisses him. They walk through the garden, stopping at a bench, and she says, “Come and sit with me.” Looking for something simple yet romantic to do on your first date? Take a walk! Who knows what you might discover along the way?

40 Days and 40 Nights

Josh Harnett and Shannyn Sossamon meet during the day and ride the city bus all around the city, like a bus tour, watching the city go by as they talk and flirt and get to know each other. This is a great idea for a date because you are able to go anywhere you want in the city. You can be spontaneous and carefree and do whatever feels good in the moment.

Sixteen Candles

Samantha, played by Molly Ringwald, finally gets her wish when Jake, played by Michael Schoeffling, surprises her with a cake and a kiss. As they sit on top of the dining room table, Jake says, “Make a wish.” “It already came true,” she says, and they lean in for a sweet first kiss. It doesn’t have to be her birthday for you to surprise your date with a cake or a picnic or a beautiful dinner. Surprises are wonderful and fun. Your date will love it, I promise.

Crazy Stupid Love

After meeting in a bar, Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone return to his home. Gosling makes drinks and the two chat back and forth. She tries to find out what Gosling’s “big move” is. Gosling tells her what his big move is when he lifts his date up like Patrick Swayze did to Jennifer Grey in the movie Dirty Dancing. She chides him, telling him that it won’t work. Well, suffice it to say, the big move works. You don’t have to have a “big move” to woo your date. Sometimes a simple date at your place or hers, complete with drinks and good conversation, can be just enough to make for a perfect evening.

Pitch Perfect

Anna Kendrick and Skylar Astin are having a first date movie night in her dorm room. As they watch the movie, the romantic tension builds and ends in a kiss that almost happens. Their date is cut short because Kendrick’s roommate walks in with her friends and so Astin leaves. Take your date to a movie, or watch one at her place. Sometimes, the simple act of watching a movie can offer opportunities for cuddling, hand holding, and kissing. Find a movie that you know she will love and take her on a movie date!

Blue Valentine

Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling are walking around New York, chatting and laughing. He pulls out his ukulele and plays a sweet and romantic song while she dances. If you make music of any kind, this is a wonderful way to woo your date. Music is the way into any woman’s heart, if you do it right. Invite your date on a romantic stroll around town. When she is least expecting it, play or sing a sweet song to her.
If you are having trouble thinking of something fun to do on your first date, let the movies guide you. After all, they worked for these characters. Use your imagination and let your heart be your guide. There is no limit to the romance and fun!
