We all know someone that is always upbeat, joyful, and in a positive mood.

I know sometimes it is hard to digest. At times I even thought that nobody could be that happy all the time and that they are hiding their sadness beneath a smile

But the more I stayed in their presence, the more I realized that these were genuine happy people.

How? I thought.

You have to admit, in a world filled with constant negativity, staying positive might seem like a losing battle. I mean look around you, all you get is 24/7 reports of wars, unimaginable tragedies and inhumane beheadings plastered all over TV and social media.

Everywhere you look it is always something negative happening. The local news is more focused on the negative than the positive.

Of course with all this going on keeping up a positive attitude can seem almost impossible.

Yet there are people who no matter what still stay positive and exude happiness.

So what is it about these people that keep them happy?

These people think differently, they look at the world through a different lens. They don’t just believe in the cup being half full, they make a conscious effort to keep filling their happy cup.

You are the creator and controller of your thoughts. This means that you can effectively defend yourself against all kinds of negativity by adopting simple, yet powerful beliefs that support a positive outlook in the face of seemingly negative circumstances.

Think about it, isn’t living in fear, not reaching your full potential, being a nagging pessimist and ugly complainer things that make a great cocktail for doom?

Life may not be perfect but it’s enjoyable.

Our goal in life shouldn’t be to create a perfect life, life will never be perfect. Instead make a conscious choice to live life in an enjoyable way. Take nothing for granted but make sure to learn from every experience in your life. Life is a beautiful canvas with many beautiful experiences. Take from it the experiences you like and let go of the ones who don’t serve your higher purpose. Get up in the morning and be grateful for everything and you’ll be on a sure way to a happier and more positive life. Realize that every day is a gift.

Control the number of negative people in your life.

Make sure to limit the amount of negative people in your life. Some people will no matter what dwell on the negative, make sure you limit your time with people who like to dwell on the negative stuff. Uplift yourself and uplift your soul by being in the company of people who brighten your day. Stay away from people who will consistently drag you down. Surround yourself with people who lift you higher- those who see the great potential in you, even when you don’t see it in yourself. The drama, negative talk and judgment are a waste of happiness.

Control the amount of negative news in your life.

While we should be aware of the events going on in the world, sometimes we should not let it gets to us. Have you ever felt miserable, guilty, or even angry while watching the news? I have and I don’t like that feeling. Now I make sure I limit the time I spend watching T.V, social media and radio. Instead I pick and choose the stories I want to read.

Your happiness is all in your head.

Yup I said it. Everything you do starts with a simple thought. Thoughts create action and action creates habits. If you keep your thoughts positive everything else will be positive and thus lead to a happy life. Happiness starts with you- not with your friends, not with your family, not with your job and certainly not with your relationship. With that being said I know that it is not always easy to find happiness within ourselves but it is always impossible to find it somewhere else. If you want a positive and happy life, change your thoughts and watch your life change. Realize how powerful your thoughts are and never think of a negative thought anymore. Your happiness is the result of your thinking. Your happiness starts and ends with you. Not with your job, your relationships or your material possessions.

Practice gratitude.

We tend to forget that happiness doesn’t come as a result of getting something we don’t have, but by appreciating everything we do have. Happiness thrives when you become grateful of all the good things happening in your life. Appreciating people and circumstances for any new lessons learned each day is always my goal.  Helping others, holding a door or offering a listening ear to the emotionally needy can be uplifting.

What other people say about me is not my problem.

People will always have an opinion about you, most of the times they mean no harm but present it in a negative way. Don’t take people’s negativity personally. Most of the time these people behave negative to everyone they interact with not just you. What people say and do is a projection of who they really are.  Even in personal interaction, what people say has nothing to do with you. People’s opinions and their actions have nothing to do with you. People’s actions and opinions are most of the times based entirely on their own self- reflection. Always remember that you are free to be who you want to be. Someone else’s opinion has nothing to do with you. Be true to yourself and live the life you always dreamed of.

Down days are o.k.

It’s o.k. to feel a little down from time to time. Life is a like a canvas with many wonderful bright colors and some dull colors in between. Expecting life to be wonderful all the time is a sure way to feel unhappy. Realize that the down days will always be part of life. Choose to see the good even in down times. When you recognize that the “good” and “bad” days are part of life’s endless cycle, you are able to let go and be at peace with the reality of these good and bad days. It becomes clear that life’s ups require life’s down.

Every experience is a valuable lesson.

Disappointments and failure are two of the surest stepping stones to success. Never let the difficulty of the lesson harden your heart and break your spirit. When things go wrong, it is mostly an indicative that you just need to make some changes and adjustments. Unpleasant experiences occur when we are going the wrong way but don’t even realize it. Push aside the tragedies and learn from the mistakes for life’s most valuable lessons are often learned at the worst times and from the worst mistakes. So whenever you say failure is not an option. Think again. Failure opens the mind to greater ideas.  We must fail in order to know and hurt in order to grow.

Let go

You don’t need to hold on to what is holding you back. It may be a relationship, a friendship a job or even your past. Let it go. You are not what happened to you. Heck you are not even your current circumstances. You are way more than that. You are what you choose to become. Liberate yourself from the routines and beliefs that have been holding you back.

Love yourself enough to walk away from situations and people that no longer serve your higher purpose. When you stop chasing the wrong people and things; you give the right people, things and circumstances to catch up.

Laugh often

Want to experience continuous joy? Laugh a lot. That’s it. Simply laugh as much as you can. Why laughter? Science has shown that laughter decreases stress hormones and increases your immune system and infection-fighting antibodies. Laughter also triggers the chemical endorphin which takes you to a state of feeling good and promotes well-being. Laughter also has a relaxing effect on the body and helps lower stress hormones.

Meditate

There is a misunderstanding that meditation means freezing the mind. But doesn’t that sound absurd. How can you freeze such a great organ that has developed over hundred thousand if not millions of years? No wonder why many people don’t even think of starting a daily meditation routine. Meditation simply means focusing on one specific thing while bringing awareness to the content of one’s mind without judgment. Meditation has such a healing effect for it cleans out the junk in the brain. Meditate often, even if it is for just 5 minutes and watch your life change for the better.
