Mind Alchemy Day 1 – Wheel of Life

Welcome to the first day of Mind Alchemy – A course which is hopefully going to transform the way you think and infuse your mind with thoughts that will move your life forward, and help you to look at the world a little differently from what you are used to doing.

We are going to kick off the course by looking at where we are at this moment and time in our lives;  We can’t move toward the things we want in life if we don’t know where we are just now.

I first started using the ‘Wheel of Life’ when I attended a seminar by Jack Black about 15 years ago.  I found it extremely useful to give me a visual representation of where my life was at a particular moment and time.

Mind AlchemyUpdate: Please click on this link for more information about the new Mind Alchemy course. All the links to the downloads have now been removed. I would like to thank all 800+ readers who expressed an interest in this course and for everyone who completed the course the first time round, it is becasue of you I could make the course better.

Start by downloading this excel file: Wheel of Life

or

If you don’t have Microsoft Excel or OpenOffice download the PDF version here

On the bottom left hand side of the excel sheet you will see the eight areas of your life we are going to focus on throughout this course.  There is a dropdown box to score yourself out of 10.  When you score yourself the line on the wheel of life will automatically change.  Once you have completed the scoring you should see something like this:

Health – This is obviously to do with how healthy you are at the moment: do you get enough exercise, do you have any detrimental habits that could harm you, do you eat well, do you have a lot of energy, are you stressed.

Money – How are your finances at the moment.  Do you have savings, do you live from month to month, do you have plans put in place for the future, do you have a lot of debt.

Family – How is your family life just now: Do you spend enough time with your family, do you make time for special days, is it quality time you spend with them, do you call family up often.

Personal development – Are you spending time on your own development: Do you spend time improving your mind with activities, reading books, going to seminars, participating in online courses J, feeding your mind with quality information.

Career – Are you satisfied with your chosen career path: do you like your job, could you do more at work to make you feel satisfied, are you studying the right course at university or college to get you to where you want to be, are you spending too much time at work.

Recreation – Do you spend enough time doing the things you enjoy in life: do you watch too much TV, do you read a lot, do you get out of the house enough, do you spend recreation time with your kids or family

Spirituality – how is your spiritual life: this is not necessarily to do with religion it’s to do with feeding your soul, your spirit, are you getting enough joy into your life, are you inspired.

Outcomes – Do you have aspirations for the future.  Are you actively working towards them.

Look at each area above and instinctively give yourself a score out of 10 for each area.  The trick to doing this is to listen to your instinct and try not to think about it too much.  What will happen is you will think of a score for your area and you’ll immediately get a feel if that score truly represents that particular area of your life.  There is no point in pretending that an area of your life is going okay with a score of 8,9,10 if you know there is a lot of improvement needed in that area; be honest with yourself and admit that there might be issues in that area, that is what we are going to rectify with this course, so be as honest as possible as you are the only one who is going to see your scores.

Save your Wheel of Life

Once you have completed the ‘wheel of Life’ you can either save it to a special folder on your computer (if you don’t know how to do this, go to the bottom of the excel file and you’ll see a tab called ‘Instructions’, this will tell you how to save it to your computer desktop).  Or, you can print it out and store all of the Mind Alchemy course in your physical folder.

Doing this will get you thinking about your life just now and these thoughts are the start of something bigger.  Your mind will start working on ways to improve the different areas of your life and work, subconsciously, on how to improve them.  You already know what to do, however because you may not have thought about it before you wouldn’t have known how good/bad your life was in all the different areas.

Consciously think about the different areas of your life throughout the day to keep you focused, and ask yourself how you can improve the low scoring areas.  We’ll be discussing this more later on in the course.

That’s it for day 1, a relatively easy start to the course, but something that is extremely valuable and useful for the next 27 days ahead as we will be referring to your ‘Wheel of Life’ often.

Tomorrow

Tomorrow we will be working on finding out what you ‘Motivation Direction’ is and how you can use it to reach your outcomes quicker. Until tomorrow my fellow Mind Alchemists……..

Action follows a thought…

This course is about taking action, and to become pro active in changing your life.  Take time to do this exercise and really think about it throughout the day.  You don’t need to wait until tomorrow to take steps to improve your ‘Wheel of Life’, but with the support and encouragement from all the members we can help each other and support each other, but ultimately ‘you have to bring something to the table!’

Your thoughts

As always it’s good to talk about your experiences and share it with the rest of the members of the course, so let us know how this exercise went for you and if you gained any insights or had any revelations about yourself or your life.

Wheel of Life is very interesting. It help me to see where I am Now. There is a lot of improvement needed in four areas of my life. Thanks for sharing such a wonderful tool to analyze my situation at present.

Very interesting – gives me good perspective to see it in this way.

  3. Reem says:

Although I am pretty aware of where I stand on all these aspects within the Wheel of Life, I know what’s holding me back, and the reason Im here is to overcome it; I dont like confrontation, I’m scared of discussion and I always look for the easiest way out. The one point in the Wheel that I dont seem to be neglecting is my Goals/Outcomes; by throwing myself into that, I’ve severely forgotten about what makes a balanced life.

You got me started in a new way. I have gone through the exerise. It’s a revelation, really!! Now where I am and where I want to see myself are getting clear. Thanks a lot for putting in so much of effort to make a difference in our life. God bless you always:)

  7. Marty says:

Nicely prepared document Steven and professionally produced. I’ve seen these before, or something similar that I use at work with clients. I did my first one (again similar) at the weekend on the coaching taster course. The one I did at the weekend allowed for adding in specifics. I like this general one in that it focuses on a good general holistic model. Finances came out at a sharp dip! Looks like I know what I’ll be working on!

This was really interesting to actually see. I think about the majority of these things often and I have ideas of where I want to go -growing, balance ect. I know that my biggest obstacle for me to overcome and achieve growth and balance in these areas is myself. Learning to put myself first, to honor myself – the core of it is to love myself enough so that I can do these things.

This is going to be a very interesting personal journey and I am excited to see what changes I will experience this month.

Good Morning Steven….good start to the course. My wheel could definately use some air to round it out.

  10. Natasha Cording says:

Thank you Steven – the wheel is a really useful representation of where I am now. I moved to France 4 months ago to be with my partner and have lately found myself struggling to stay positive/motivated. We opened a bar, for 15 hours a day, 6 days a week that is where I am – a mute in a world of white noise (I don’t speak French yet). Having completed the exercise I realise I need a lot of re-balancing, but more than that, looking at the 8 areas and seeing where attention is needed also gives a positive focus rather than being overwhelmed with a sense of unbalance. Thank you again.

    • Anastasiya says:

      Hi Natasha,
I read your comment and I felt so compelled to reply. I moved to the US after marrying my husband and I understand how difficult it is to find your balance in a foreign country. Support of your loved one is sometimes the only thing that keeps you going and you simply close your eyes to everything else.
I personally found that the period between the third month of living in a new country and a year is the most difficult part. You are not quite used to the new ways and you are missing your native country (friends, family, traditions) s much that you just want to get on the plane and leave. I hope you are doing better than I did when I moved to the US :-)
If you are willing to talk – stop by my blog (just click on my name) and send me a message. I love talking to people who move to other countries because until you do you will never understand what it is really like.

Hi, to both Natasha and Anastasiya. I too moved to a foreign country, I suppose there are a lot of people that have done so, more or less successfully. I am from Holland and now live on the island Mallorca, which is part of Spain. I moved here with my Dutch husband, got divorced after 4 years here and now have a German partner (I just like it internationally)
Luckily I do speak a few languages (the Dutch are famous for that) and I know how hard it can be. My advantage here is that there are a lot of foreigners from northern Europe that did not speak any Spanish that I got in touch with by working in a local bar.
Natasha, the first thing you must do is learn the language, otherwise you will never get any contact with the local people, France is very difficult, because the French only speak French. It is a beautiful country, but you will never love it if you cannot become part of it.
I wish you much love and strength, I really hope your partner is giving you all the support you need. Is he French? Then he should make an effort to teach you the language as fast as possible. It will be hard in the beginning, but the rewards could be enormous.
I will keep checking on your comments here.

    • Hi Natasha, thanks for leaving a comment on your current situation. I know my friend Anastasiya has left a comment for you. I hope this course helps with getting a sense of you and more balance.

  11. Anastasiya says:

    Hi Steven,
The wheel of life is a great beginning for your Mind Alchemy series. I use this tool a lot because it really teaches people (and reminds me) to keep everything in life in balance. A lot of times we forget about it and I start chasing just one goal. Unfortunately by the time we reach this goal we realize that our life is in complete chaos.
Balance is the key in my opinion :-)

    • Hi Anstasiya, great to see you helping out another reader.

We do often forget to keep our lives balanced, and focussing on it for the next 28 days is going to be something special I think.

  12. istivan says:

Good start for the course: perspective.

I think a lot about where I am in life and where to go: actually I overthink and repeatedly fall into analysis-paralysis. (The realisation is sinking in right now as I’m writing this.) It seems that I am balanced, but at a lower level than I wish I’d be! Oh well, that’s what life is all about, one big learning experience, isn’t it?

    cheers

  13. Huge fan of the Wheel of Life as well. We use it with a number of our clients as well.

I really like how it visualizes the areas we are doing well in contrast to the areas that we could improve. The fact that it is your first step in the program is also brilliant, since it will set a good foundation for what you would like to work on.

  16. Natalie Dolan says:

I have encountered simular wheels of life to this also. It is a good starting point to identify where you currently are in life and what areas need attention.
For me its indentified my two strongest areas beening Family and Personal Development.
The other 6 areas are average to low level on the scale.
For me Family got a 10, because I get great fufillment out of spending time with those I love and trust. Relationships are important to me. I also enjoy online relationships, meeting new people and learning new things from them and learning about whats going on in the world.
I have fallen out with a few family members and friends, and even though intially this was upsetting, eliminating them has after time, only made me feel better not worst. Sometimes its healthy for us to eliminate negative relationships.
Personal Development (8) is something I first encountered several years ago when I read Louise Hays: You can heal your life. It introduced me to the concept of how our thoughts can control and manipulate our actions, behaviours and lifestyle. I have been reading Personal development materials on a daily basis seriously for the last 12 months.
Health (4), Goals (4) and Career (3) are my three weakest areas on the wheel. I have had arthritis, aniema, fatigue, asthma, and depression on and off for over ten years. Career wise I have studied several different subject areas but never really found one subject or area stimulating enough to progress with for long enough, also my health issues have made me struggle in this area too.
I agree that one area of the wheel can interlink really well with other areas of the wheel, therefore a low level in one area such as health can cause low levels of many other areas of the wheel, as your health really affects all areas of your lifestyle.
I also have some limiting beliefs and lack of confidence issues, although I have learnt many lessons in life and have gained some confidence from some of my lifes experiences.
Money (5) , Recreation (6) and Spirituality (5) are all middle levels ranging from 5 to 6.
I look forward to tomorrows motivation aspect of the course in hoping it will help us all take action towards balancing out our wheels.

This is great! It really made me stand back and take a look at my life, wow. I can’t wait for day 2!

  18. Engilbert says:

    Dear Steven,

I have finished doing this exercise however I once did this exercise but not with a moving wheel in excel document like you presented it. For me it was a different experience. I thank you for it. I can clearly see it now where I need to improve and I am really looking forward for DAY 2. Thank you Steven and I must say you are a very special, true to your heart and such giving guy. [by the way can you sent me DAY 2 to my personal e-mail address.] Thank YOU!

  19. Gerb2006 says:

I think the most difficult part for me in doing the wheel was not over-thinking it and being “instinctual.” I found myself trying to quantify things (ie. “Well my wife and I spend X number of hours together a week” or “We have X amount saved up in the bank.”) Perhaps that’s something the next 27 days will help me with. I’ll be the first person to admit that I over-think things way too much and eventually talk myself out of doing what I need to do to improve: “I don’t know if I’ll really have time to work out today. Next week is pretty full-up too, so I’m not going to get much chance to do it then…” Maybe there should be a wheel of rationalization? :P

    • Hey Gerb, it’s great that you recognised that you over-think things. Going with your gut feeling is always best with the Wheel of Life, it gauges how you feel and takes out the need for thinking too much or over analysing.

    • You have hit this right on…this is me to a “T”….always over-thinking and rationalizing everything. I know this wheel exercise will work on my mind even if I don’t consciously think about it over the next few weeks (and hopefully bring me to thinking and working on the areas that need work) thanks, Sharron

  23. Gordon says:

    Great Stuff Steven,
You really have went the extra mile on this course. The wheel of life is a model that is used at the beginning of a coaching program to identify what your current position is, and to increase awareness in how you can change aspects of your life to make it better. The visual impact of the wheel can be like ice water on your face, it wakes you up.

  24. Wayne says:

I did the excersize and found it informative. I plan on pinning it up on my wall for awhile. That way I can focus on while I excersize. I had a couple of weak areas that need work. Looking forward to day 2.

  25. Denise says:

I’ve done similar exercises before (rating each area of life) but never with a visual representation like the Wheel of Life. I knew it was going to be out of whack. I lost my husband suddenly three months ago, and am just now coming out of the fog of grief. Maybe it’s too soon to try something like this, but I seem to have lost my direction. I’m hoping the daily exercises will give me a new focus and help me get my mojo back.

    Steven,

This is a great exercise! It’s the perfect way to begin a course like this because we focus on where we are at and naturally that leads to thinking about where we want to be.

  29. Angel says:

This was a great start. I’ve been actually pondering these things since the beginning of the year, and slowly I’ve been accepting the truths behind each area. I’ve often forgot that things need to be balance, and I stretch myself too thing trying to make them all happen at once. It’s a great refresher to remind myself that balance helps all aspects of life.

  30. Thanks, Steven-what a great start. I have to agree wholeheartedly with Angel in the comment just above….I’ve been pondering all these areas of my life since the first of the year (well, maybe since Nov of last year), and I, too always seem to stretch myself too thin trying to make it all happen at once…then I get frustrated because nothing is going fast enough….and soon it’s all just too much, and then well, you know….easier to not do too much!

  34. Steve, thanks for sharing the Wheel of Life. I have used this Wheel every day for the last 7 years or so, and it’s help me stay somewhat balanced in my life. For example, I realized that I spent too much time in my work and task oriented goals last year, and not enough time with friends and family. Therefore, I’ve changed my focus to be more relational in 2011.

Wow. This is amazing once you transfer where you are at in life onto THE WHEEL OF LIFE. I have been feeling unsettled and very discontent with my life for a very long time now and to actually put it onto the wheel of life, and see exactly where I am lacking is very motivating to get those 1′s and 2′s up to 9′s and 10′s.
Its so easy to get wrapped up in just living and surviving that you truly lose focus and balance. I see how this wheel can definitely help me monitor where I am lacking in life and I am committed to making necessary changes for myself and my family.
