The ONE Thing That Will Help You Succeed in Life

Why are you so different from anybody else who has succeeded in life? The answer is, you are no different at all except that you maybe fail to do one thing that successful people do.
I am currently coaching Kelly on how to make her blog better.  I looked over her site and wrote a long email about all the initial changes she would have to make so that she could start off with a good base for building her blog.  I expected Kelly to take a few weeks to implement all the changes, but two days later she came back and said she had made all the changes I suggested.  The site is at Life Is Now.
What did Kelly do that most people wouldn’t?

She took ACTION!

At a recent mastermind event I attended with Chris Ducker, where I met some great, savvy, entrepreneurs, one of the guys Rob Cubbon spoke about a site called Udemy and gave us all a few tips on how to utilise it.  I got back from London at 10.30pm so couldn’t do anything with the information at that time.  However the next day I had a full course all set up at Udemy and published it at Udemy/AlterYourJacket and in the last 5 days 309 people have subscribed to the course, even though I told everyone that the sound quality was quite poor, and Udemy have not yet indexed it.

If you’re thinking about taking action on your goals in life, then you’re not doing a thing to reach your goals.  You have to take action NOW to reach any of your goa

ls in life.  That means taking action on the small stuff as well, like doing DIY in the home, talking to a girl you’ve fancied for ages, or since we’re living in this modern world, talking to a guy you’ve fancied for ages – Take action now, thinking about it just gets in the way and will throw up a million excuses why you shouldn’t do it.

Getting outside your comfort zone

A lot of us, me included, don’t take action on something because we haven’t done it before and it makes us feel a little scared.  But, imagine sitting in your armchair with your slippers on having a cup of tea and watching TV at 90 years old, and saying to a friend, I wish I had done that when I was younger.  Do you want to be that person who constantly says ‘I wish I had done………..’

My most uncomfortable situation ever!

About 2 years ago now I was asked to give a speech to around 600 CEOs at a conference in India on a personal development topic of my choosing.  My i

mmediate response was ‘No Way!’, but I wrote back the same day I got the email, and agreed to do it.  Now, that might not sound that bad, but when you consider I had literally never given any kind of speech in public before, and I mean any kind of speech, it becomes a different story.  I went out to India and it actually went okay, I gave a 20 minute talk on beliefs and how to install new beliefs and get rid of limiting beliefs, and I overcame my fear of public speaking by throwing myself in the deepest of deep ends.

Making yourself accountable!

I’ve heard a lot of people say that you shouldn’t tell anyone when you have a goal or a dream to do something big.  My take on that is that you should tell the whole world, tell anybody that will listen to you.
I started telling people, about 3 years ago, that I was going to give up my full time job and start my own online business.  Did anybody think I would actually do it? Actually a lot of people did, because they seen how passionate I was about it, but the truth is a lot of people advised me against it and told me how it wouldn’t work, and why I shouldn’t do it.
You’re going to get a lot of people telling you why you shouldn’t do something, but that’s cool, it will make you all the more determined to do it.BUT!

By telling everyone who will listen, you will make yourself accountable and you will give yourself a sense of urgency.  After I started telling people that I was going to start my own business, I would get people who hadn’t seen me in a few months and ask me how the business plans were coming on, that gave me a sense of urgency, a sense of having to fulfil my promise, and a deeper desire to achieve my goal.

It’s your turn to make yourself accountable

Okay,  it’s over to you.  What is one of your big goals in life and what are you going to do today to take action on achieving it?
It could be something small, but as long as you take action every single day.  So tell us what you’re going to do today – don’t be shy :)

  • I love your story about giving that speech. It’s especially powerful because most of us can imagine how truly terrifying that must have been. 6 CEOs would have been enough for me!

But I agree with you that action is what leads to success. NOTHING is created without action. It reminds me of the Michelangelo quote, “If people knew how hard I had to work to gain my mastery, it would not seem so wonderful at all.”

Its the same for all of us. It’s the sweat that forces success, not some magical endowment.

  • Great post Steven – lots of personal development writing focuses on dreaming bit and creating big powerful goals BUT they only matter a jot if we actually take action towards them. There’s a temptation to stay in dreaming/planning/manifesting mode as a way of (subconsciously) avoiding moving out of our comfort zones. Having a plan (especially a flexible one) and taking consistent action towards it is the key – which you’ve nailed here Steven!

  • Great post Steven! You’re absolutely right. Action is the most important thing when it comes to realizing our goals. Action is what makes things happen. It’s what brings results.

And it’s entirely under our control.

Lack of action is the number one dream killer out there. Caving in to fear is probably the second. I think it’s great how you faced your fear and gave that speech regardless. That’s just badass. Just the thought of speaking in front of a large group gives me the willies.

But that’s what it takes to live a self-determined life. Take action. Face your fears. And over time, you’ll reap the benefits of a life well lived.

  • Totally agree, we get nowhere if we procrastinate. Taking action can start the momentum but in the end we need to be taking action that will move us in the right direction. We could be wandering around in circles not getting anywhere. Like Kelly she took you as a mentor and is getting the right action to take.
Thanks for the post enjoyed the information in it.

    • Hi Karen

thanks for your comments. Yep Kelly has done brilliantly as she took action, all we need to succeed in any part of our life is: Desire, Courage, Knowledge and Action

  • I am going back to school to get my high school diploma after that I want to join the marines reserve. Also I wanna Quit my Porn addication

  • Thanks for the motivation – I would just comment that while taking action is vitally important it also has to be the right action. One directed towards whatever you want to achieve. Otherwise you just become busy – which I think is one of today’s diseases. Everyone is ‘busy’ these days but not always productive. Selective action is the key – but definitely action

    • Hi Ian

Thanks for your comment. I’m not sure I agree. Taking any kind of action gives you momentum. If you wait to take ‘the right kind of action’ you could be stuck in the same place for a long time.

Keeping busy is something else entirely, like in the workplace we can look busy just to look as if we’re doing something, but we’re not necessarily taking action on a goal in this situation.

What I am speaking about is taking action on your goals. For example someone who wants to start an exercise program might take weeks to decide which exercise program is best, but if you took action immediately you start any exercise program whilst learning about your own body and you can still research exercise programs – if that makes sense :)

      Thanks again, appreciate your comment.

  • I appreciate the way you handled your assignment in India.I believe one thing that makes you succeed is concerted action and focus.
Like someone said FOCUS – Follow One Course Until Successful. That focus is what will make you an expert at something.More so, if you can bring authentic value to someone in this big, wide world.

Of course you will need creativity, innovation, understanding of the basics, perseverance, diligence, fortitude, patience, and all other sterling qualities.Yet these attributes will pretty much align with your inclination when you have one of the greatest characteristics; concerted action.

    • Hi

Yep, you definitely need all the qualities you mentioned here, and that comes with taking action. The more you take action, the more you focus, and the more you focus the more creative, innovative and motivated to learn more you will become.

  • Awesome inspiring post. I am going to do some reading. Get some reading done. Go to my doctor’s appointment and go to a baseball game with a friend and strengthen our relationship.

I will not sit and waste my time today doing useless stuff. Thanks for the post.
