If you want to change, I mean really want to change, something about your life, I’d like to share what I have learned over the last few months that has made a tremendous difference in my life and hopefully help you change.
Lately I have been infused with a real passion and drive for what I am doing; writing and blogging. It’s never really been that way before as I had my mind on so many other ventures. Now the other ventures are out of the way I have the drive and real motivation to get ahead with my blogging, and with my writing. I am not the world’s best writer, I know that, and am working on this every day. However, I love it. I love the thought of someone reading my writing and it sparking a light in their mind that set’s them off down the road to the change they want. There’s no better feeling than that, and it’s even better when I get an email from someone to say how much an article has meant to them.
I am jumping out my bed even earlier than normal and can’t wait to start writing or interacting with readers. My mind is buzzing with ideas which have to be written down and saved in case I forget them. Admittedly not all the ideas mature into a fully written article but they are saved in case I can come at it from a different angle down the line somewhere.
How I keep my mind alight
The simple way for me is to literally immerse myself in what I want at the end of all this; to become a full time blogger and writer. I study what other bloggers have done before me and read their stories, I read their writing, I read writing in my field of interest which is personal development, I visit sites about writing, I visit job boards to get work as a freelance writer, I write, I write and I write. It’s seems to have gone beyond passion and my mind is alight with possibilities, with ideas, it’s like the duracell bunny on 10 cups of coffee, the only problem is slowing down.
I am going with the flow just now as words are dripping off the page and I don’t want to stop in case the muse disappears on me, but I have ways for dealing with that.
I always had a goal to become a full time blogger, which is why I started the blog in the first place. However my mind wandered into affiliate marketing, internet marketing, making products that I was interested in, becoming a coach, so many things, and the blogging took a back seat. Now I can honestly see myself as a full time blogger, and it’s the very first time I have believed that I could actually do it. It’s taken me three years to reach this stage but every single change I have gone through to get here has been worth it.
I have managed to secure two long term writing positions with top blogs and am looking for more. This is in the space of a few months of focus and concentration, imagine what it will be like this time next year.
How to set YOUR mind alight to change your life
1. Know what you’re aiming for
The example above shows I didn’t really know what I was aiming for with regards to my online goals. You really have to know what you’re aiming for. It’s like an archer firing at a target that he cannot see. Once you’ve got this clearly in your mind, find out if it sits right with you.
You find this out by visualising yourself doing what you’re aiming for, you feel yourself doing it, living it, breathing it. If it sits right with you and that gut feeling is saying ‘Go for it, fire that arrow’ it’s time for the next step.
2. Deep immersion
Totally immerse yourself in your chosen goal. If your goal is to become a football player, you have to watch football, play football, join clubs, read football, go to matches, dream football, always have a ball at your foot. Read about your heroes in your chosen field. David Beckham’s old neighbours remarked that they never seen David without a football at his feet when he was younger. This is how we learn to become great, this is how we stand out from the crowd. Other people see your passion, your dedication, and are excited by working with you and helping you in your goals.
This part may last for some time, it could be months it could be years before you start seeing results but you have to keep deeply immersing yourself and never lose the passion.
3. Planning from the middle outwards
Once you’ve deeply and passionately immersed yourself you will be surrounded by a network of people who will help you to get where you want to go. It’s now time for planning how you are going to get there. Some people get there in the deep immersion stage and everything naturally falls into place. However a lot of people will have to start planning after the immersion stage.
Your network of friends, family and new ‘network friends’ are key to you reaching your goals. The way to get them to help you is to help them as much as you possibly can. If someone asks you for help with something, you are never too big to do it. Always help out when you can. Even with the ‘outskirt’ people who ask for help, if they are genuine about their goal, then help them. Get a name as someone who is genuine and willing to help someone reach their goal.
From the network you will see a path of people who will help you to reach your goal faster. This is not using people, you are simply using their influence and contact and they will be asking for your help in the future, so they see it as an investment and you see it as an investment; a win- win situation.
4. Maintain the passion
It’s easy at this stage to get sidetracked by other things. there are many people who have fallen from grace with the trappings of fame and fortune and forget the people who put them there. To maintain your passion, practice gratitude and remember all the people who have put you where you are today. This is true of everyday life as well. Keep you passion alive and see everything anew everyday. I read a great post the other night from Jonathan Wells which explains this better than I can, read it here
5. Know when to branch out
There will come a time, like in a footballers career where their passion for playing will be turned to passion for teaching others. Once you’ve reached this stage it might be easy to think that you are over the hill and no longer have the skill you once had. This is not true at all , it simply means you direct your passion, your enthusiasm, your hunger into another part of the goal (no pun intended there). When a footballer plays, he plays for himself and the team, when a coach coaches they are carrying on the legacy they had as a player and reaching and touching the lives of so many more people.
Conclusion
Your thoughts and action determine your success. Keep your mind focused on your target, immerse yourself and help those around you and you will reach your goal.
How are you getting there?
What sets your mind alight? what are your passions? How did you get there? It would be great to hear your stories.

Great article Steven. Passion is a strong motivator. Because when you do something that you find fun, the act of doing it won’t feel like a chore, more like simply enjoying yourself.

I love this article Steven because you talk about living your passion. As I started reading it reminded me that often we have so many ideas and inspirations that can sidetrack us from the path we’re on.
Oh, and I happen to believe you’re a great writer – your writing is as if you’re having a conversation with a friend!
Thanks for the compliments Miki, I wasn’t fishing at all when I wrote that

I’m happy with your choice of endeavor Steven. There will come a time when you’ll hit a curve in your goals, but always confirm to yourself that you will never give up. You may think that you’re not as good as you thought to be; but who knows, you can be the greatest writer in the world! All you have to do is believe and act upon it.

What you also need is a whole lot of persistence and determination to keep going when things don’t initially work out your way. To just keep pushing through the “Dip” as Seth Godin calls it

Hi Faramarz, I think with the immersion method this shouldn’t be too much of a problem but I know what you mean.
Hello Steven,
i was wondering : how do you know/find what you’re aiming for ?
Philippe
Hi Philippe, I gues this post is about keeping yourself motivated after you;ve found what you passion is. I think I should do another post about actually finding your passion
Steve,
Very insightful post. Its clear that you have a great ability for self-reflection and introspection… which is to be expected of a mental health professional! The two things that stand out for me when it comes to motivation and achievement are:
1. Well formed outcomes – knowing what you want, how you will get it, and what it will be like when the thing is achieved. This is from my NLP background.
2. Focused effort – once you know what you want and have a well formed outcome, avoid distractions and go for it.
3. Action generates motivation – the mere act of starting something motivates me to do the thing (similar to your total immersion comments in many respects).
I’ve really enjoyed your blog over the past couple of weeks since I’ve started visiting. In many ways you are becoming a role model to me as a fellow mental health professional and wanna be blogger!

Hi Chris, what field are you in?
Your comments are spot on about having well defined goals and taking action.
Thanks for the compliment, hopefully we can reach our goals sooner rather than later when it comes to blogging.
Hi Steve,
Right now I am working as a counselor in a non profit community center. The client base is primarily low income, many are dual diagnosed with substance dependence and Axis I or Axis II conditions. I’ve also been developing and running a 12 week life skills program for residents in public housing. I’m planning on starting a PhD in Clinical Neuropsychology next March, which will be somewhat of a change for me. Regardless, I still want to remain in the counseling field as well. Thanks for asking!
Your post on focus has motivated me to sit down and write out some very specific goals for my own blog, and for some other aspects of my life. I really enjoyed it.

Chris Akins´s last blog ..Simple•ology: The Simple Science of Getting What You Want – Book Review
Good morning Steve from a chilly farm today (49 degrees F). I’d first like to say that your passion comes through the internet wires like heat from a toaster. Your writing is up to the task of drawing readers in to bask in the warmth as well. I for one am inspired by the Joy you get from blogging. What amazed me most about this particular blog was how anyone following their passion would identify with what you said. Although every Human Being travels a different Path of passion, each road is paved with the same stones. Your words would be recognized by anyone following their Bliss. Now to your request for “stories” (about coming to passion). The question “how do I find my passion in life?” could be the biggest, toughest riddle we all face. Those who solve it discover what to do with their lives. And….like you….these folks pursue the Bliss come hell or high water. But, sadly, they’re a very small minority. Few ever discover their passion, despite many passionate people trying to help them. The reason for this is simple too. Imagine your passion and mine is hidden in a huge ocean of potential at our “center”. There’s no way we can go to this place to find our passion. It will remain hidden there forever if we don’t discover something important. This. There’s a pipe going down into the ocean with a tap on top. This tap has to be opened to let the passion flow. If we don’t know where the tap is or how to open it, there’s no chance we’ll know our passion. Unfortunately, most men and women don’t even realize there’s a tap holding their passion passion back, and never know their heart’s true desires because of it. That’s how I came to my passion. I literally stumbled onto the tap like a brain-dead Donkey after some forty five years of wandering around without passion. That was about 15 years ago, and, like yourself, I’ve been cultiviating those seeds of passion ever since. Like you, I’ve been using my passion to reach out and add value to other lives as much as I can. With passion comes a responsibility to do that….as you have obviously discovered yourself. Anyhow, to end with a small tongue-in-cheek bit of humor…”that’s my story and I’m sticking to it”! (A true story). Many thanks for your insights Steve. Ciao.

I’d like to hear more about how you ‘discovered your tap.’ I think it’s a great metaphor. I’m a certified Chi Gong practitioner….within that tradition you might say that we help people open their taps. It’s pretty interesting.
I’m also a trained facilitator of the Big Mind / Big Heart process developed by Genpo Roshi (http://www.bigmind.org/Home.html). I would absolutely recommend this process for anyone seeking to open his tap.

That is so bizarre. I left a comment here yesterday but it looks like it didn’t go through. Bummer. It was a good one. LOL!! I relate to all five points you make here and they are key or essential but I really relate to the passion and deep immersion. It takes both of those (for me) above all others to set my mind alight. I always, even while maintaining my goal, seeks ways to keep the passion alight in all aspects of my work and personal life on all levels. I couldn’t live without passion and would become the walking dead. And I am also someone who has to tune out all else and really immerse myself in a project so that the creative juices can really flow. I not only do this short term by NOT multi-tasking but long term by staying focused on my goal and setting short term deadlines and goals, which help me stay focused.
Great article Steven. And I am thrilled to know that you are right in the midst of creative greatness. It really is what Life is about. Good for you my friend. Never let anyone take that away from you, because you are for a grand purpose and so much to give the world. Hugs, Robin

First of all I just have to disagree with your statement in which you said.
“I am not the world’s best writer, I know that”
You are so wrong about that. You’re an excellent writer. World’s best? What is that? In my book if you’re excellent your in the world’s best. Of course there’s always someone better at us in something but you’ve got writing skills. I read a lot of blogs and I know what I’m talking about.
So now that I’m inspired, let me list you 5 reasons why you’re a great writer:
1) You know how to write a great hook right at the beginning of each article therefore enticing the reader to want more.
2) You have the transition phrases after each paragraph introducing the next paragraph and still tying what you will say with what you just said (that way the article flows better).
3) You have deep philosophical thoughts ( which is a lot more than most people on earth). I believe this comes from a lot of life experience and analytical skills.
4) Your writing is very conversational and open causing readers to identify with you as a person immediately.
5) Your passion is quite evident as it evokes emotion as excitement from me when I read. Since as I see so many other people commenting and reflecting on what you just said I have to say that it evokes that reaction from others too. Isn’t that what writing is all about?
So there – I rest my case

Madeleine´s last blog ..How to Get Help When You Need It
Steven, I’ve just discovered your blog and I see that I have a lot of great catch-up reading to do! I’ve been wrestling with the problem of finding my passion for a while now. I had a great (at least superficially) corporate career going…making a great salary, super benefits, rides on the corporate jet, etc. Then I got hit with acute leukemia. An anonymous stem cell donor from Germany saved my life with a bone marrow transplant. It’s amazing what a near-death experience will do for your perspective and life priorities. For one, I immediately saw that my life had been way out of balance…work taking priority over everything else in too many cases. Also, I felt a very strong urge to leave behind a legacy of some sort. What would my daughter and little grandchildren have to remember me by? I wanted to write something…to make art…anything beautiful and tangible. Great goals…but easier said that done, for sure. Fast forward to now…my disability benefits and social security benefits have expired. My 401K is gone….my daughter has been robbed of that nest egg, which was at least some form of legacy. It truly does not pay to get sick….especially from something that has a long recovery period. I’ve been trying all year to find a job. I’ve recently taken a temporary one, but I’m not even getting 40 hours a week…at an hourly rate that is a fraction of what I used to make.

Sorry to post such a pity party….just trying to let you know where I’m coming from. My passion, such as it is, has been flickering like a match in a thunderstorm.
Keep up the inspiring posts!
