If I didn't know the title of the piece, I couldn't move forward until I found it. Until I wrote the first paragraph, I couldn't do anything else. Although I do depend on knowing the overall organization of an article, I now often write parts in the middle first. In many cases, I find it easier to write the first paragraph later in the process. At that point, I might have a better idea of what the first paragraph should convey. In the end, though, I don't have any formula for approaching any article. Very annoying. That's why I have a notepad next to my bed, so I can scribble something down (even in the dark) and reconstruct the next day. If only my handwriting wasn't so awful in the dark...
