Reply to: What about those who succeed without goals?

Frustrating, isn't it?

Of course, every lottery has a winner! Statistics in the US show that 85% of all big jackpot lottery winners will end up broke.

There are very few people who succeed without goals. When they do, it's largely a matter of chance. In fact, I wouldn't neccessarily label that success, but rather luck. If a person is lucky enough to enjoy a true sense of satisfaction without setting any goals, then that person is blessed! Most of us will not succeed by chance.

I will not define any particular person's vision of success. Success is determined by the individual based on that person's unique needs, ambitions and desires. If someone "wins the lottery" and considers that a success; I'll wish them well! (I may even be jealous!)

For most of us, success is a self-directed process. I'm not one to wait around for some cosmic accident; I'd rather take success into my own hands as much a possible. I don't want to leave my success to chance!

Thanks for the stimulating comment!

Reply to: So at the end of the day...

Interesting post!

Limited to your abilities and how hard you work? I would say this is an important consideration. Many self-help gurus are very generous with dispensing pabulem of “you can do anything you set your mind to.”

While I certainly agree that all achievement originates in thought; our success may ultimately be defined to a large degree by our talents and abilities.

However! You are free to choose to expand your talents and abilities. The development of new skills and talents may be, in itself, a success to be celebrated and can expand one’s capacity to exploit new opportunties.

In my experience, the people who enjoy the greatest success and happiness are those who design their success in synergy with their talents, abilities and passions. Current limitations in one’s talents and abilities need not limit one’s success; these limitations may, in fact, provide great motivation for personal development.

Yes, in most cases this does require a lot of hard work!
