Sleep paralysis
scary figures in your sleep?
I found a great article on Sleep paralysis in Science News discussing describing the personal account from David J. Hufford of a sleep paralysis episode and his encounter with a malevolant entity.
It mirrored my experiences and I have since found other sites and major studies detailing sleep paralysis and a common thread runs thoughout these strange experiences. There seems to be some kind of entity, as described in my previous article: sleep paralysis and the shadow people.
Psychologist J. Allan Cheyne has collected over 28,000 stories from people who have experienced the sleep paralysis.. Cheyne runs a Web site here to collect stories from individuals.
Read the full article here it is really fascinating

Good Night Sleep
Lack of sleep can result in stress, lack of concentration, moodiness, memory loss, lower motivation and fatigue. It is important to get a good night sleep otherwise it may lead to different sleep disorders. More than eighty percent of people suffering from depression are suffering with sleep problems.
At present, one of the most common problems is Sleep deprivation. In fact the Better Sleep Council surveyed a thousand adult respondents and discovered that more than 30% of them confessed to not getting enough sleep each night.
Here are 101 ways to get good night sleep for those who experience difficulty in getting sleep.

I haven’t read the Science News Article but sleep paralysis is a well known phenomenon. The sleeper is still dreaming and during REM dreaming the body is paralysed. The sleeper can’t move and imagines a malevolent being is the cause.
In fact this is a half waking nightmare and easily explained. People used to think it was the devil but now are more likely to believe it is aliens. Many of those alien abduction tales are simply sleep paralysis. I had the experience myself as a teenager. I was terrified and had no idea what was happening.Since I had had 5 years at a convent boarding school the apparition took the form of the Devil.

Sleep paralysis has always been fascinating to me. And I’m not exactly sure if I believe it’s all in the brain or not. On one side, the logical, rational part of my brain tells me it’s almost certainly the mind “playing tricks on itself” so to speak, but having experienced paranormal phenomena myself, I’m inclined to think not every episode of sleep paralysis is that easily explained away.
Comment by Drew Jones on 18 March 2008:
Getting enough sleep is so important to a persons daily balance. Too much sleep makes you tired and groggy. Not enough sleep makes you irritable and anxious, not a good combo.
Sleep is a natural thing, we all need it to survive. Take advantage of it when you can.

Trust me it is the most frightening thing someone can go through. I have had it for years and it is only recently i have found out what it is! However since doing some research i realise i am not the only one. I can’t speak for other’s only on behalf of myself. It seem’s to very from person to person. Basically one thing i will say is that i am in no doubt alien’s exist. I know when a dream is a dream, and reality is reality. I am older and wiser and i know what scare’s me and what don’t. I know my own mind and i know what i’ve seen and experienced and felt with all my being. I have seen them with my own eye’s! Please don’t try to pursuade me it was a dream. It cannot be.!

Hi, I am 30 and have been experiencing sleep paralysis since my teenage years. I never knew what it was and was not too confident to speak about this. phenomenon. I actually stopped thinking about it as it became less frequent. Then I heard from my husband that his best friend had similar experience. What made me research this matter further , was the fact that my seven-year-old son has recently started complaining about having nightmares and that he was unable to move and breath as there was someone sitting on his chest. i have to admit that it was terrifying to hear and brought a lot of unpleasant memories. I only found out today what the condition is called and was surprised how common it is but shocked that my son is experiencing this at such a young age. He is absolutely petrified of sleeping in his room by himself.

Hi Magda
Someone said it in an earlier comment that if you sleep on your side the condition of sleep paralysis did not occur. Maybe this would help your son.
I know I was only able to induce sleep paralysis when I was sleeping on my back. It’s just a thought. I hope it resolves itself soon.
Comment by Magda on 27 April 2008:
Hi Steven,
Thank you for your advice. I tried to explain it to him, but he struggles to understand the whole situation. I will keep on trying.
Anyway it had happened to me while I was sleeping on my side, and to my surprise I experienced it last night. At least I knew what it was.

HI. I’m 14, and i’ve had this problem for a few months…maybe a year
i had no idea what it was…it just seemed like bizarre (yet terrifying) dreaming. I wanted to ask sufferers…in my experiece, it feels like you’re going to die. It’s strange, because although i finally learnt not to panic, i finnally get over it (mine normally lasts fo a few minutes) then it comes back again. I’ve tried everything- moving, walking around for as much as an hour, even going in a cold shower (this is, i must remind you, at about 4.30 am) but nothing works and it comes back. It means that on some nights when i have to go to school the next day io can get as little as 2 hours sleep! How do i stop it?
Comment by Katrin on 29 April 2008:
The reason I’m on this site is because I just recovered from yet another episode, first one in years and my husband thaought I got a stroke. This is the first time I experienced it laying on my side. I’m unable to tell how long any episode last but it feels like an eternity. The differense was that on my side I could still breath easy while unable to move or make any speach apart from whimper.
I know now that there is only two things that ’snaps’ me out of it. 1, Someone to roll me over.
2, If I can’t get help, I found that if I can calm down and make myself relax the episode passes a lot faster.
As far as the shadows goes, it’s your eyes still rolling and your eylids fluttering in a struggle to open the eyes.
I hope this will help someone else, beacuse it really is a frightening experience.

An interesting concept - is this due to a real paranormal spirit activity or some type of sleep disorder?
My Uncle Carl is a minster and he claims he is able to see the presence of Angels and also Demon spirits. In fact he has written books on the subject and even traveled to Europe to speak on the subject of the presence of these beings.
On the other hand is this due to an actual physical disorder like sleep apnea. The best approach is to eliminate any possibilities like some physical disorder, before preceding further.

I took over a funeral business and it seems that I took on more than first expected.
There were rumours about a ‘hidden room’, when this room was located it was much larger than expected so I moved into it as I work away from home through the week.
I was fine about staying there on my own through the week until I suffered my first and only experience of sleep paralysis which happened about a week later.
I woke unable to move which really frightened me, when I eventually managed to get up and put the light on I looked in the mirror and my eyes were very swollen as if I’d been crying for hours (which I hadn’t) or maybe I’d been upsidedown - I’ve no idea what happened that night but I know that I will never stay at my Funeral Home alone again. I have been tempted when I’ve been tired at the end of the day but it was the most frightening experience I’ve ever encountered.

Hi, I suffered with this for years on and off. I found it was caused by exhaustion. I discovered the best way to deal with it whilst experianceing it is to accept it, don’t try and move and just let it pass. Remember your mind can play nasty tricks on you whilst in this state so stay calm. You will awake from it, and what feels like anhour it probably only a minute or two.
Take care

I would be happy to take a lie detector and speak to the expert’s. I don’t think any of the scientist’s and Doctor’s really know. I certainly don’t think it is as easy as being awake, but your body’s not! If it were as simple as that we would’nt be on here and it would make good topic of conversation down the pub! Or at a dinner party. There was a early morning cooking programme on a few week’s ago. one of the chef’s kept trying to apologise for not having his mind on what he was doing. He then mentioned that he had sleep paralysis the night before, yet the other two chef’s just ignored him and carried on talking over him. I did’nt catch his name, but I felt really sorry for him. If that were Briany Spears it would have been all over the media like a rash! Sleep paralysis for some unknown reason seem’s to be ignored by the press and the media. At least to my understaning of it. Doe’s anyone agree?
