I have spoken a lot about beliefs and how to change them to make your life
better. There are certain beliefs that a lot of people believe and I
think it’s time to address these.
We are initially given beliefs from our parents, teachers, peers, TV and media. When
we are young we think adults know more than us so we generally trust in what
they say. However as we get older we form our own beliefs about the world. However
some of the residual beliefs from our childhood can remain. Sometimes
they have remained without us knowing about them.
Here are some beliefs that may be residual, see if you recognise any of them
and change them.
- If you fail at something you are a failure
This is perpetuated at school and throughout our days of turning into an adult. We
are encouraged to win win win at all costs. If I fail at something, and
I have many times, I try again, and again, and again until I get it right. If
you believe that “if you fail at something you are a failure” then
that means everyone in the world is a failure. Don’t hold yourself
back by believing this. Install a new belief.
- Why change it if it’s not broken
I don’t mean changing for the sake of changing. I am talking about
improving upon existing appliances, processes etc. We need change to
move on with life and you will always come up against people who don’t
like change, avoid them if you can. If you see something that could
be improved try and implement it.
- You are not skilled enough to go for it
Nobody in life is skilled enough until they start doing it. If you want
to do something just start doing it, don’t stress about not getting into
university to do a degree in computing, just do it until you get in. The
internet has more information than you will get at university, college or school
it’s just a matter of finding it. If you are good and you sell
yourself well, you will get noticed.
- You are too old to start something new
The average life expectancy in the UK is about 75 for men and 79 for women
and it is similar in the US and Europe. This will change and soon we’ll
be seeing the average life expectancy at 100. This means we are never
too old to start something new. Starting a new venture is a great way
to keep the brain active and to keep motivation up for living. I believe
we are a nation of people who expect to die at around 75 or so, so what happens?
We do. If we expect to live to 100 we would do more changing, feel less
inhibited by time. Just do it.
- Believing God is an entity outside your control
You control God, not the other way about. When I say God, I mean a spiritual
force, I don’t mean the bible and all that as that is obviously not to
be believed literally. God is a force within you, when you pray, you
are praying to yourself, when you ask forgiveness you are asking yourself for
forgiveness. Nobody in this universe controls you, you control the force
within you, never let go of that belief. You do not need anybody or anything
to allow you to live your own life, live it for yourself and help others to
live theirs.
- You won’t amount to anything
The very fact that you are alive says that you are special. If you want to
be extraordinary you have to put in the effort. Every single one of us
has a talent we don’t know about or have not yet been recognised for. Try
everything to find something that you love. I am a great believer in
change; you don’t have to do one thing all your life. Change your
lifestyle many times until you find a path you love and are willing to work
on.
- The world does not revolve around you
The whole universe is all about you. Every single person on this planet
has a different world going on inside their heads. You see the world
differently from me and I see it differently from someone else. Therefore
the world is about you. Tell me now: what are you going to do to change
your world?
- Nobody believes in you
I believe in you, but my opinion is worth nothing, everybody’s opinion
is worth nothing. Work on believing in yourself and work on letting go
of needing others to believe in you. As soon as you start believing in
yourself other people will start believing in you, but let go of needing their
belief.
- You will never make that amount of money
I have heard this so many times. You will make exactly what you expect
to make. If I say to myself ‘There is no way I could make a million
pounds’ my brain will not look for ways of making that million. If
I am determined enough to make a million my brain will help me look for ways
of making it, no matter how outrageous the idea, at least you will be creating
ideas.
- There is nothing you can do about it
Rubbish! You can change any aspect of your life you just can’t see it
yet. Some people never get past this and it’s such a shame. Life
can be hard and it takes guts to make the decision to change your life, but
you can change it. Know what you want, know the steps you have to take
and then change it.

Perhaps the worst belief to have is…to believe that you can’t change your limiting beliefs. You can and it’s not as difficult as you think. Here’s a brief article that explains it…

I’m glad I found this site, tons of good stuff!

These are some truly fantastic tips. I enjoy the positive message you are conveying. I try to dance around with some of these ideas on my own blog from time to time. Keep up the good work… I’ll be sure to check back soon.
Hi there,
I would like to invite you, and your readers, to be part of my challenge.
I’m trying to post 1 Million Love Messages From All Around The World in my blog.
I hope that you can help to promote this challenge… and, of course, i’ll be waiting for your message
Best Regards From Portugal,

most if it is mostly aok, #5 I cannot take on board at all – ’tis risky & dangerous. Otherwise we are certainly meant to be much more than what we can ever dream possible.
Great list. I agree that most of us think that wa are a failure when we fail something, especially those things that we value most in our lives. It’s normal to feel bad about it, but we musn’t let it overcome us.
I think that the belief that no one believes in us is only an influence caused by the environment we live in. If no one is there to motivated us, then the thought of having no one believes us will probably get stucked in our heads
Thanks for a very succinct list. Among hundreds of quotes about talent and achievement on my site, one of the main themes is how beliefs can either stimulate our personal growth – or limit us.
I interested to talk about the first believed. Mostly people will see them as a failure because they meet a lot of fail in their life. However true winner will try again and again until they find success.
Just like Thomas alfa Edison who invented bulb light. He failed 1000 times before he success. But today we remember him as the inventor of bulb light. We don’t see how many he failed.
Yep, I think this is great! People can get into a rut of negative thinking and actions and habits
This may sound simple – like people are attracted to like
Like minds are attracted to like
Like thoughts are attracted to like
If you are interested, there is more at: NigelPendrigh. Com/Interview
You have to be what you want to attract and Be, Do, Have and spend more time with people who are confident and help build up your confidence too
Well Said Steven,
Belief in ourself, our ability to achieve our set goal will motivate us. This is the source of energy for positive action.
Thanks a lot, Steven, excellent post.
Much to ponder about!
Cheers!
Andre

Thanks Steven, this is just up my street.
I would have perhaps added a number 11 – ‘you are much more than your beliefs’. I think life gets really interesting when we have the courage to step beyond what we know into unbounded world of what we don’t yet know, of the things that we don’t yet believe are possible.
We take this step each time we lay aside what we think we know and open ourselves to inspiration…. those ‘my God.. where the hell did that just come from’ moments that are bedrock of real genius.
Brilliant blog Steven. Thank you.
Thanks for the great list.
Many inspiring thoughts and I feel that once you fully grasp “Belief #5″ then apply that to every awakening moment of your life,it is then you realize that YOU are the creator of your own destiny and there is nothing that can stand between you, your dreams, and the hidden potential YOU have deeply embedded inside. Be Well, Paul
the site is an array of subjects of university of life to make people a success. thanks.
Since you are God perhaps you can explain free will
“I don’t mean the bible and all that as that is obviously not to be believed literally.”
Obviously? Obviously?!?
I am amazed people think your advice is great. Anybody with half a mind could cook-up this crap. Which means maybe you are obviously not to be believed literally. If you put it in print, people often think it is true.
Hi Dave
Thanks for your kind comments, I appreciate your feedback.
I thought it was decent advice! Thanks!
I have been programmed to believe all 10 reasons to some extent or another & working to turn that programming around .Thanks For the Post
Ken
John Koetsier, yes obviously.
It is clearly obvious to any objective mind that the bible is a work of fiction.
For instance;
Say a newborn is raised their whole life without being indoctrinated with any sort of religion, at age 18 is put into a room with 10 different books. 7 of which are textbooks, the remaining 3 are the Quran, Torah, and Bible. The Young adult is then asked which of these books are factual.
Do you really think that somebody not indoctrinated at a young age would ever think a single line of one of these books is factual?
Thanks for the insightful post, it’s amazing to think about what the average person could accomplish in life if they just mustered up the resolve to master their mindset.
I plodded along for what seemed like an eternity before I learned to crush these limiting beliefs (I was victim of some, not all of them) and create new ones, cultivating a mindset along the way that was conducive to opportunism and success.
Personally, eliminating the limiting beliefs can be a big challenge – an easier way, I found, is to simply focus on manifesting the opposite of the limiting beliefs.
I loved “The Power of Concentration” by Theron Q Dumont, for teaching me how to focus and cultivate my will power in matters such as these. I also had great success with subliminal message videos, which is what my blog is all about at its core.
Keep up the good writing, your blog is a wealth of positive resources!
I thought it quite incredible how this list of life blocks contain so many phrases that I heard as a child that adults around me used as a means of control.
Wow, this was posted almost a year ago and I just happened upon it today…a day when I really needed to happen upon a post like this.
Thank you.
“Nobody believes in you” this is probably the most common thing that stops people, great post!
Absolutely right!
This is one thing it took me awhile to realize in my own life. It’s kind of hard to find these beliefs sometimes that you need to change. However it’s definetely worth it to spend the time and try to figure out what beliefs you have to change, then change them!

We have beliefs about everything! From our early experiences with people and events, we develop beliefs about many things. The irony is that, although we employ a certain type of rudimentary logic in shapiing those beliefs, we are still too young to use clear-headed, cognitive, critical thinking. (That capacity does not usually arrive until long after all those beliefs have settled into our synapses, far below the surface of our awareness.) We lack the capacity to choose our beliefs during those vulnerable early years, and so they become Habit Stamps, stamped into our subconscious. By the time we are adults, we have accumulated a wide collection of them.
If you are stuck anywhere in your life at ‘almost’ you are at the effect of your beliefs. This program may help – http://www.GetTheGreatLife.com. Tuesday, September 29th at 4:30pm PT
We are all limited in some way by our beliefs. I’m a big fan and student of John Maxwell and this week I was listening to a podcast of one of his presentations. He made the point that sometimes we look at people who are successful in any field and we try to attribute it all to talent saying things to ourselves like “oh, if I had that ability I would be a success too.” However, long lasting success that isn’t short lived and the proverbial 15 min. of fame is always the result of execution of success principles. A person can have the talent of 10, but if they are lazy and do nothing, they have nothing. On the other hand, another person may have limited ability, but BELIEVES they are destined to do great things. So they go to work on themselves and their lives and over time, their life and skill level change dramatically. Good list Steven

Great stuff, Mindset, Marketing & Mission. That’s what i follow with your tips, cheers
Textbooks merely state observations based on what we can see, feel, or understand.
The Bible explains aspects of life that you cannot simply observe. It is purely human to assume you can do everything on your own. No textbook will ever explain how the first living thing came to be.
I am finding it difficult to concentrate, I am now 67 yrs old and wonder if I can improve my memory.
You are right–everybody is a failure. Perhaps one of the greatest failures in America is one our biggest successes: Abraham Lincoln. He failed so many times at what he was trying to do but he never quit. In the end, he became President, kept our country together during a Civil War…and, oh yeah, freed the slaves.

Number 10 is the one that I see the most… People are either A.) Tired of trying or B.) Never try for what they really want to change – thinking, what’s the point?
There is always something that can change… if nothing outside you can change – you can change your outlook about the issue, and even choose to make it unimportant to you!

Gosh, it must be hard dealing with those beliefs. My parents had a rough time after leaving Iran and we certainly didn’t enjoy luxury but not once did I feel the lack of support and love and belief from them, although I was pretty much encouraged to only go for a strictly technical/engineering education – which in hindsight didn’t suit me well but that’s a different story. Thanks for this list!
What an inspirational post! … Like someone else said here, a lot of people just stop trying. I’ve certainly felt that way sometimes, but the instant I realize what I’m doing is the moment that I spring back into action.
Being aware of who you are and what you’re doing is key in my opinion.
Cheers!

Great post. Also people adopt other people’s belief and convert them into their own without realising it, so they never really realise the actual belief that is preventing them as it has a different source as oppose to their own.
All of these are a good reflection of common false beliefs. You’re right they hold us back and limit us to lead mediocre lives that could be so much better. Imagine if you were to take just one of these false beliefs and reverse it – you would experience change in your life , compounding the effect by bolstering your belief in possibilities of real change.

I really love # 6 it touches me… keep the Good work on Steven
This is a belief list worth sharing with my readers and with my clients. Oftentimes, we can cover our beliefs through becoming a passive observer of our automatic thoughts. Over time, we will identify beliefs that are not helpful. At that point, we can do a cost benefit analysis of whether it’s worth it to hold on to that belief. We can then design a belief that serves us much more effectively.

Although I’m not arrogant or narcissistic, the world does revolve around each and every one of us to some extent.
We live by how we perceive the world. As we grow older, we can break down these barriers but it’s still viewed from within our own mind.
It’s a bit like how others perceive you vs. your own self perception – it’s always going to be different – but who better to understand the world around you than you.

I was agreeing with what you blogged here, until I got to #5. I am not God. And when I pray, I pray to a personal being outside of myself. I don’t know why you brought up your lack of faith in the reality of a personal God.
To believe in God & the bible is not in anyway self-limiting; on the contrary belief in the God of the bible enables one to truly live a life without limit—knowing that everything I do has an eternal perspective & eternal & infinate rewards. It’s a motivating thought, to know that what I discipline myself to do, will not just count for my time on earth, but will count forever.
(The rest of the article I agree with)
I wrote my comment before I read yours. Said almost the same thing. KNOWING that God is bigger than me, is so freeing. Knowing that I don’t have to have it all figured out is liberating. I do agree with the rest, in fact, as I pointed out in my comment, some of it is quite biblical. IE, you are not skilled enough to make a go of that. Moses, Peter, Paul are just a few that come to mind who felt that way, but because they surrendered to the bigger God and saw themselves (eventually) the way their Creator saw them, they did awesome things.
Really liked 9 out of 10 of these, believe they are soooo true. However, God is so much bigger than me, the Bible is to be taken literally and the knowledge that He is bigger than I am does not hold me back but sets me free. I can honestly say say, because I KNOW (not believe, but know in my bones) that God is real and bigger than I am that I don’t understand this moment at all, but that’s ok, and that is probably one of the most freeing experiences one can have. The rest, is actually quite biblical, just so you know.
“The whole universe is all about you.”
I know this intuitively to be true… yet, the realization that my entire life – all of who I am, what I do, why – has been defined primarily by my reactions to and unconscious belief in the idea that the universe does not – and should not – revolve around me. This revelation strikes deeply to the core of all those circumstances I put myself in that only end up holding me back. I have been taught I should live my life for others, that my own needs and desires are ancillary. I learned my lessons well.
I am not certain, however, how – or if it is even possible – to completely eradicate such deeply ingrained beliefs about the “selfishness” of such a notion that proposes not only does the universe revolve around me… My universe cannot exist WITHOUT ME.
I can change my life a thousand times over, and probably have. No matter what or how thoroughly I have changed, how intuitively I recognize this truth… still those feelings of obligation, guilt, and concern for others that ignores my own duty to myself.
